ENS, Netherlands

Baas Pot- en Tuinplantenkwekerij grows potted flowers for the European market under glass on more than 50 hectares at its Ens/Northeast Polder site.

An increasing demand for heat for year-round production and also recently an incipient demand for lighting required the expansion of the energy supply. In addition to various gas boilers, a bioenergy line with a conventional grate firing system for wood chips already existed.

The decision for the second energy line was made in October 2016 in favor of our Kombi Power System® with a 4.5 MW counterflow gasifier. This generates up to 500 kWel of power and 3,800 kW of thermal output in cogeneration with an ORC system in heat-controlled mode.

The reasons for the decision were the low de-swathing costs, the high overall efficiency >95% and, above all, the extremely low emission values and this without additional filter technology.

Furudono, Japan

For more than 15 years, our cooperation partner Polytechnik has also had a partnership with the Japanese plant engineering company Kyowa Exeo Corporation from Tokyo.

After several biomass combustion and boiler plants, the decision has now been made to invest in a first wood gas power plant, and this, significantly, in the province of Fukushima. This is a clear sign of the energy turnaround!

This decision was preceded by several tests on our experimental carburetor with Japanese cedar fuel.

In the first expansion stage, a gasifier system is now being built at the Furudono site (Ishikawa municipality) to drive a gas engine with 990 kWel. Following successful demonstration and test operation, construction of a second expansion stage with a further 990 kWel is planned for 2022.

Due to the fact that the Kombi Power System can process biomasses with high water contents even without drying, and in Japan these reach up to 60%, Exeo sees great opportunities for further marketing of the countercurrent gas generator technology in Japan.

Experimental carburetor

Fuel tests as part of the FNR funding project "Renewable raw materials: "Development of technologies and systems for bioenergy production and use with the aim of further reducing greenhouse gas emissions".

Our operating experience to date has been limited to the use of untreated wood chips from forest residues and landscape conservation. However, the market often requires flexibility to fuels with significantly more favorable prices.

These are for example:

  • Bark from sawmills
  • Waste wood
  • Miscanthus
  • Compost overflow (woody screen residues from composting plants).

For this purpose, we have set up a test gasifier of the 0.1 MW power class at the Blue Energy site in Senden, which enables us, among other things, to carry out customer-specific tests. In addition to the suitability of the fuels, the gas composition, as well as the quantity and composition of the by-products (wood oil) and residual materials (ash) are recorded and recorded.

Charmey, Switzerland

A major energy supplier in the canton of Vaud invests in and operates a large number of renewable energy projects in the canton and beyond.

In 2016, for example, a biomass heating plant in need of renovation, including a district heating network, was taken over and currently being expanded in the beautiful mountain town of Charmey (Canton Fribourg).

The existing biomass boilers will be replaced by the KombiPowerSystem. This will supply the thermal spa, a swimming pool, hotels, apartment buildings and other consumers as far as the town center.

The heart of the plant is a updraft gasifier with a fuel capacity of 4.5 MW for natural wood chips from forest and landscape management. In combination with a gas engine of 770 kWel and an ORC plant for postconversion of 120 kWel, this plant constellation achieves an unprecedentedly high degree of electrical utilization.

The special integration of the "Les bains de la Gruyere" thermal baths with a three-pipe system enables low-temperature heat utilization by means of flue gas condensation.

All in all, not only are new milestones set in terms of both power efficiency and overall efficiency, but very low emission levels are also guaranteed thanks to post-combustion of the engine exhaust gases and the DeNOx plant.

Puidoux, Switzerland

In 2017, a new biomass cogeneration plant and a district heating network to supply the sports center and other municipal, commercial and private customers were built in Puidoux in just one year.

The heart of the plant is a updraft gasifier of the 4.5 MW power class, fuel capacity for untreated wood chips from forest and landscape management. In combination with a gas engine of 770 kWel and an ORC plant for post-combustion conversion of 120 kWel, this plant constellation achieves an unprecedentedly high degree of electrical utilization. The heat output can be controlled from 1.5 MW up to 2.7 MW. This is possible due to a 50% power reserve at the gasifier.

The post-combustion of the engine exhaust gases as well as the gas condensates in the always hot combustion chamber is the guarantor for permanently low emission values and this without additional exhaust gas filters or catalysts.

Extension natural energy Hersbruck

In 2004, Naturenergie Hersbruck was founded with the main shareholder ForstServiceGesellschaft Nürnberger Land to supply heat to the new Frankenalb Therme.

In the first stage of expansion, a biomass heating plant with grate firing was realized. The connection of the new tax office building as well as several residential blocks enabled the further expansion to a biomass heating plant. In the extension of the heating plant from 2012, a biomass countercurrent gasifier with combustion chamber, as well as a compressor air heater and an externally heated gas turbine for power generation were realized for the first time.

With the innovative energy system, the biomass-Archilles heel fine dust is a thing of the past: According to TÜV measurements, the new system imitates 1 - 2mg of particulate matter per Nm³of flue gas, which is less than 5% of the strict legal limit - and without the need for costly filter systems.

Due to various problems with the turbine process, this had to be shut down in 2016. However, the gasifier plant itself will continue to be operated together with the combustion chamber and will be used to supply district heating from now on.
